Thanks Merrill Goozner - well thought out. To me, having advocated for nearly 50 years for universal access to quality healthcare for all Americans, it comes down to answering a simple question: "Do you believe that access to healthcare is a fundamental human right?"
I spent 13 years being taught by the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth that, yes it is. It's one of the reasons that I'm a former Republican. Most of them simply say "Leave it to the private sector." Well, we know how that has turned out.
The public option is a way to provide universal access for all Americans it in our "worst in the developed world" fragmented healthcare system.
